Skyjo strategy for beginners
Replace obvious high cards, protect genuinely low cards and do not rush to end the round.
First habits
Track exposed high cards, avoid emotional attachment to a matching pair and ask whether ending now leaves you uniquely lowest rather than merely feeling low.
Start by taking clear improvements. A visible 1 or 2 is usually attractive against an exposed 9, 10, 11 or 12. Keep low and negative cards unless they block an unusually strong matching opportunity.
Watch how many hidden cards remain. Ending the round with several medium or high cards visible is dangerous because every opponent gets one last turn and your positive score may double.
Also: the nerdy view
A decision should compare the known replacement with the expected value of drawing blind, adjusted for information already exposed. The printed deck is not uniform, so a simple average of -2 through 12 is misleading.
Early in a round, hidden positions offer more upside but more variance. Late in a round, certainty becomes more valuable because the end trigger is close.
