How to use negative cards well
Keep negative cards in most situations and use matching opportunities only when they do not sacrifice an even stronger layout.
A -2 or -1 directly lowers your score, so replacing it with a positive card is normally a bad trade. Protect it unless an edition effect forces movement or a very unusual matching plan justifies the change.
Three equal negative cards can still form a removable Classic column, but removing three -1 cards changes a -3 contribution to zero, which is worse for your score. Do not remove a negative column automatically without checking the rules and consequence.
Also: the nerdy view
Column removal is not always beneficial. Removing positive equal cards reduces score; removing equal negative cards increases it toward zero. Because Classic removal occurs when the complete equal column is revealed, strategy should avoid intentionally completing a negative column where legal choices allow.
