Prefer clear improvements and avoid relying on a discard surviving all the way back to you.
In a large group, many cards change before your next turn. Take strong visible opportunities now rather than planning to collect the same discard later.
Watch for a player nearing the end, because the round may close before a long matching plan pays off.
Also: the nerdy view
More players increase the flow of public information and the number of opportunities for a value to be consumed. Your next-state forecast therefore has more branches and lower certainty.
The round also contains more final turns after an end trigger, which raises the chance that a narrow lead disappears.
