Should you chase matching columns?
Build low-value columns opportunistically, but do not hold expensive pairs for too long.
A completed column scores zero, so matching can be powerful. A pair of 1s or 2s is attractive because the downside of waiting is small. A pair of 11s remains dangerous because it contributes 22 points until completed.
Also: the nerdy view
A pair creates a contingent payoff equal to the points removed if the third value is found. Evaluate that payoff against the number of matching cards still unseen, expected turns remaining and the cost of passing up alternative improvements.
The public discard pile can make a match more reachable, but every player can see that opportunity. Do not count a future discard as yours.
