Should you keep a 7 in Skyjo?
A 7 is usually replaceable, but urgency depends on the stage of the round and your matching prospects.
Keep a 7 temporarily when the only alternatives are similar or worse. Replace it when a clear low card appears, especially late in the round.
A pair of 7s can justify limited patience, but not at any cost. Two 7s still contribute 14 points if the third never arrives.
Also: the nerdy view
Seven sits above the usual unseen-card mean under the standard published distribution, so a blind replacement can have positive expected score reduction before accounting for information and option value. The exact threshold changes as cards leave the deck.
A matching pair adds an all-or-nothing payoff. Model it separately rather than pretending the pair makes each 7 low.
