Should you keep a 5 in Skyjo?
A 5 is a middle card: often acceptable early, but worth improving when the round is close to ending.
Do not spend the whole round chasing a tiny improvement from 5 to 4 while a 12 remains exposed. Later, when most high cards are gone, replacing a 5 with a 0 or negative card can decide the round.
Also: the nerdy view
Under the standard full-deck distribution, 5 is close to the deck's average value. That makes a blind one-for-one replacement much less compelling than replacing 8 or above. However, the draw route includes rejection and timing effects, so the raw average is not the whole decision.
Use remaining-card information rather than a fixed rule when the deck is heavily exposed.
