What is the best opening move?
Take a large certain improvement when offered; otherwise a blind draw preserves more options than forcing a weak discard swap.
When the opening discard is much lower than one of your visible cards, take it. Replacing an exposed 11 with a 1 is an immediate ten-point improvement. When the discard is mediocre and does not help a likely column, draw blind instead.
Also: the nerdy view
The opening decision contains little opponent information, so evaluate certainty against the initial deck distribution. The discard route has zero value uncertainty but forces placement. A blind draw has distributional uncertainty and the option to reject, although rejection also reveals a hidden card and advances your layout.
A universal best first move cannot be stated without the visible cards, discard, player count and deck composition. Publish model results only with those assumptions attached.
