What Happens When You Get Three of the Same Card in Skyjo?
If you reveal or place three identical cards in one vertical column, you remove all three cards from your grid.
That can erase a large block of points in a single move.
The cards must be vertical
Classic Skyjo uses a 3×4 grid. The matching rule applies to one of the four vertical columns.
Three 8s stacked vertically disappear. Three 8s spread across a horizontal row do not.
All three must be face up
You do not remove a column because you suspect the third hidden card matches. The set is resolved once all three cards are revealed and identical.
Can a swap complete a column?
Yes. A card taken from the draw pile or discard pile can complete a matching vertical set.
Resolve the column after the exchange.
Can it happen at the end of the round?
Yes. When remaining face-down cards are revealed for scoring, a newly completed matching column is still removed before the total is calculated.
Should you chase matching columns?
Sometimes.
Two visible 9s in the same column create the possibility of removing 27 points. That is valuable.
But the third 9 may never arrive. Do not reject strong low cards for several turns simply because you are emotionally committed to a match.
High-value pairs are generally more interesting than low-value pairs because the potential points removed are larger.
What about negative cards?
Removing three -2 cards would remove a potential -6 from your score. That can make the matching rule actively undesirable.
The lesson is simple: a matching column is not automatically good. Compare the points you remove with the points you would have preferred to keep.
Does the empty column get refilled?
No. Once removed, those positions stay empty.
Can you remove more than one column?
Yes. Each completed vertical match is resolved when it occurs.
Why the rule matters strategically
Every card has two values:
- its face value if the round ended now;
- its positional value as part of a possible column.
An 8 normally looks poor. An 8 that completes two other 8s can be excellent.
