Can you replace a face-down card?
Yes. A card taken from either pile may replace a face-down card in your layout.
How it works
Choose the hidden position before exposing the old card. Put your new card face up in that position. The replaced card goes face up onto the discard pile.
You are accepting the risk that the hidden card might have been better than the replacement. The move is legal even if the revealed old card turns out to be -2.
You take a 1 from the discard and replace a face-down card. The hidden card turns out to be 8, so the move improves your layout by seven points. If it had been -1, the move would have made the layout two points worse.
Important distinction
Replacing a face-down card is different from rejecting a blind draw. In the replacement, the new card occupies the chosen space. When rejecting a blind draw, the drawn card is discarded and a hidden card is simply turned over.
