The Best Skyjo Opening Strategy
The opening turns are less about building a perfect grid and more about gathering information while removing obvious problems.
You start with only two visible cards. Ten positions are unknown.
Attack expensive visible cards
A visible 10, 11 or 12 gives you a clear target.
If the discard offers a substantially lower value, replacing a high card gives a guaranteed improvement.
Replacing a 12 with a 2 saves ten points immediately.
Use poor draws to reveal information
When you draw from the deck and reject the card, you reveal one of your hidden cards.
That can still be a useful turn because information improves later decisions.
Do not force a column from turn one
Two matching cards in one column are an opportunity, not a command.
If you have two 9s, the potential 27-point removal is meaningful.
But if you reject good cards for several turns waiting for another 9, the speculative plan can become expensive.
Watch the discard pile
The discard pile is public information.
Cards other players repeatedly reject can tell you something about the standard of their boards and the values they may be targeting.
Opening priority list
- Replace very high visible cards with clearly better values.
- Take exceptional low cards.
- Reveal information when the available card is mediocre.
- Preserve valuable column opportunities without forcing them.
- Stay flexible.
The best opening is not one rigid pattern. It is a board with fewer obvious liabilities and more information.
